Soundfulness

The method for body awareness, mindful awareness, and empathic resonance.

The body relaxes. Attention settles. Connection returns.
Where words can no longer reach.

What Soundfulness Is

Where words can no longer reach

Soundfulness came into being in the rooms where language falls short.

A care facility where a client with Down syndrome and deep autism hadn't looked anyone in the eye for years. A classroom where a child couldn't sit still. A wellness room where someone had lost the feel of themselves. A circle of adults who had forgotten they were alive on the inside.

In all of those rooms, the same thing turned out to work: subtle sounds, present voices, empathic resonance. The field that arises when two or more people stop pretending and simply sit together in sound.

Soundfulness is the method we built out of that. Twenty years of fieldwork. Simple to learn. Deep in what it does.

How this method came into being

I met Kees Peters in 1996, at the Steiner school our children went to. He was a biochemist, a music therapist, and later a teacher at the Academy for Open Consciousness (Academie voor Open Bewustzijn). I had a small sound-healing practice I called "Helende Klanken" (Healing Sounds). He had one called "Klankheling" (Sound Healing).

We became friends. We became each other's teachers. And for twenty years, together, we built what would later be called Soundfulness, a method now in use in four worlds: personal development, wellness, education, and health care.

Kees has since retired. He shaped the method into what it is, and I carry it forward from here.

What we built together does not belong to one of us. It belongs to the field it came from, and it is in use by the people who work with it now.

The four worlds

the method works in

Soundfulness for Personal Development

Develop your own resonance field. Let yourself be surprised, moved, softened, by how gentle, spontaneous, and alive you can be in contact with yourself and with another. Experience who you are in essence, without the layer over the top of it.

For whom: adults who want to come home to themselves, and coaches who aim to deepen their own field before bringing it to a client.

Soundfulness for Wellness

Where the body gets stuck, in stress, tension, high sensitivity, poor sleep, migraine, digestive and circulatory problems, Soundfulness lands in the system. Not as a technique, but as presence. Sound where thinking can no longer reach.

For whom: wellness professionals, therapists, and people who are keen to learn what is happening underneath the layer of symptoms.

Soundfulness for Education

Children and young people who can't sit still, who are anxious, tense, misunderstood, or stuck in learning and attention, find in Soundfulness a language that needs no words. Calm that isn't imposed, but made possible.

For whom: teachers, school counselors, educational psychologists, and parents.

Soundfulness for Health Care

With clients who have Down syndrome, deep autism, dementia, or other conditions where language no longer works, Soundfulness offers a safe, simple way of being together. Sounds, subtle rattles, present voices. An empathic field in which the client is no longer locked in behind a label.

What I learned there, and what is the heart of this method: they are alive on the inside. The labels, autistic, closed off, non-communicative, are wrong. Sound reaches what words cannot reach.

For whom: care workers, practitioners in elder care, in intellectual-disability and autism care, and in palliative care.

This method can be learned. Not as a technique. As presence. Small groups, in the field itself.

Two books from this work

The teachings that have ripened in this work are now being set down in two books.

Surrender to Your Essence

A Journey Home to What You Always Were

Thirty years of listening worked out across thirteen chapters. At the end of every chapter, a practice of remembering, something you can do today, not next year.

Releases in 2027. The Dutch translation follows within six months.

The Four Rooms.

Four Doorways of Coming Home

Four rooms, earth, water, fire, air. Four entrances. One homecoming that is not a destination, but a place from which you live from now on.

The theory of elements that is the heart of this book has matured over twenty years of Soundfulness fieldwork (1996–2016). It will be published in late 2027, in Dutch and English simultaneously.
